BABY SQUIRRELS

If you find baby squirrels on the ground, please give their mother a chance to retrieve them—she will usually come down, pick them up, and carry them back to the nest if the babies are warm, safe, and she is still nearby. Place them in a small box or container at the base of the tree and watch from a window for 2–4 hours. If the mother does not return, she may have been injured, killed, or unable to care for a baby hurt in the fall. In that case, keep the babies warm and bring them to us. Do NOT feed baby squirrels. They require a very specific formula and nutrition, and giving cow’s milk, kitten milk, or any other dairy can severely damage their digestive system. The first image shows a healthy squirrel compared to one that was fed cow milk for 4 days before being brought to us. Please do not try and raised baby squirrels from home!
