Baby bunnies are often mistakenly “rescued,” so please don’t kidnap them. Mother rabbits only visit the nest twice a day—at dawn and dusk—so it’s normal for babies to appear unattended. Before removing them, make sure the mother is truly gone. Place a piece of yarn in an X over the nest or sprinkle flour around the entrance; if the X hasn’t moved within 24 hours and the babies’ bellies are not full of milk, bring them to us. If the X is disturbed and the babies look round and fed, leave them in place and provide simple protection to keep them safe. Baby bunnies leave the nest at about four weeks old, when they’re roughly the size of a tennis ball or softball. Because they have a very high stress‑related mortality rate in rehabilitation, keeping them in their nest whenever possible gives them the best chance of survival.
