Rabies and distemper can look very similar, with symptoms such as neurological behavior, excessive saliva, twitching, seizing, and circling. In Lubbock, we most often see bats and skunks with rabies, while foxes and raccoons commonly show signs of distemper. If someone is bitten by a sick or unusually behaving wild animal—especially one of the top five rabies‑risk species: bats, skunks, foxes, raccoons, and coyotes—they must seek medical attention immediately. When possible, the animal will need to be humanely euthanized and tested for rabies to protect public safety.
